Aims and Vision the PE, Health, Well-being and Fitness Faculty

At Lancaster, the ethos of the Faculty is “Sport for All and Sport for Life”. It is hoped that through both curricular and extra-curricular sport that all pupils will engage in sports that they enjoy. For this reason enjoyment of the activities is a key aim in what we consider to be a broad and balanced curriculum. We are a faculty that is passionate about encouraging all our students to reach their potential and offer a wide and varied curriculum to allow for this. We encourage our students to achieve not only academically but also to develop them as leaders, creative thinkers and develop a lifelong passion for physical activity.  Students are given the opportunity to act as leaders which enables them to develop their communication skills, confidence and independence. Lancaster's READY values (Respect, Employability, Accountability, Diversity and Young Ambassadors) are an integral part of all our teaching and learning in PE as we strive to prepare them for the future.

Facilities:

  • Sports Hall - 3 Badminton Courts: used for badminton, basketball, handball, sports hall athletics and many fixtures.
  • Gymnasium - 1 volleyball court size used for gymnastics, fitness, basketball, dodgeball, handball, table tennis and volleyball.
  • Outside facilities - 6 tennis courts, a multi use games area, hard court football goals and outdoor basketball courts.
  • Field – 2 rugby, 2 football pitches. Softball, rounders, cricket pitches. 400m athletics track and long jump pit.

PE, Health, Well-being and Fitness at KS3

At Lancaster we believe that it is important to deliver a curriculum that is broad and balanced which offers opportunities for new skill development. It builds on KS2 learning and competition, covering invasion games, striking & fielding, net & wall games and athletics.

  • Invasion games: football, rugby, basketball, hockey, tchoukball
  • Net and wall games: badminton, tennis, table tennis
  • Striking and fielding games: rounders, cricket
  • Fencing
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Swimming at the Aylestone Leisure Centre
  • Fitness
  • Athletics activities: sprints, middle distance, long distance, throws (javelin, shot, discus), jumps (long and triple)
  • GCSE terminology – we pride ourselves on extending students literacy through the teaching of technical terminology required at GCSE level in all core PE lessons.

PE, Health, Well-being and Fitness at KS4

All year 9, 10 and 11 students follow a core PE programme which now includes more competition and theoretical content which teaches the key terms associated with PE.

They can also opt to take the OCR Cambridge National Sports Studies. Three units are studied and assessed through a mixture of internally assessed and externally moderated portfolios of evidence and an externally set and assessed question paper (60% practical and written coursework, 40% theoretical examination).

We study the following Units:

  • R185 - Performance and leadership in sport
  • R187 - increasing awareness of outdoor and adventurous activities
  • R184 - Contemporary issues in sport

These sport qualifications offer learners the chance to develop different types of skills through practical means; communication, problem solving, team working, evaluation and analysis, performing under pressure, and formulating written findings from practical investigation are all transferable skills which can be learned and assessed through these qualifications and utilised in many other educational and employment settings.

The qualification has been designed with practical and engaging ways of teaching in mind and enable learners to:

  • develop a range of skills through involvement in sport and physical activity in different contexts and roles
  • develop their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations
  • gain a better understanding of the complexity of different areas of sport and the sports industry
  • increase their awareness of different ways to stay involved in sport and physical activity and of different careers and roles within sport.

The Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies takes a more sector-based focus, whilst also encompassing some core sport/physical education themes. Learners have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge about different types of sport and physical activity, skills development and sports leadership to their own practical performance. They will learn about contemporary issues in sport such as funding, participation, ethics and role models, and will develop an appreciation of the importance of sport locally and nationally, different ways of being involved in sport and of how this shapes the sports industry.

Years 9,10 and 11

  • Invasion games: football, rugby, basketball, handball, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, hockey, tchoukball
  • Net games: badminton, volleyball, tennis, table tennis
  • Striking and fielding games: rounders, softball, cricket
  • Fitness activities
  • Athletics activities: sprints, middle distance, long distance, throws (javelin, shot, discus), jumps (high, long, triple)
  • Leadership

Performance Pathways

To enable our students to compete in sports outside of school we offer a range of programmes that they can participate in after school at Lancaster and then the link with the club gives them the opportunity to join a performance pathway.  We have traditionally had very strong links with Leicester City Football Club, Leicester Tigers Rugby Club, Leicester Riders Basketball and The Leicestershire County Cricket Club with many notable ex-students playing for all of the clubs at first team level.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We believe that the PE Faculty plays a major role in the provision of activities outside school hours. All students are encouraged to attend afterschool sessions. We also compete against other schools in a wide range of sports.
